All about me!

Why did you choose your particular subject area?

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in cinema almost all my life. In my life, I have probably watched more than a few thousand movies and this is not counting the countless number of different TV series. And even as a child, looking at the screensavers of various film studios, I wondered what a screen saver would look like for my Studio. However, time passes and interests have shifted slightly. As a result, I am now more interested in making a movie that I would write a script for. This was the reason to go to study for this specialty.

Why did you choose this particular University?

I chose universities that are quite different and in different countries, but mostly they are English - speaking England and the USA. Since I have a negative experience with the United States, as well as the fact that I have already studied English in London, contributed to the choice of a University in this country. In addition, I looked at educational institutions in my country, but VGIK, which is considered very strong for Europe, has a number of problems that did not fit me very well. For example, this is a fairly strict selection, in which I must know a huge number of films that I am not interested in and will not help in the future, as well as according to students, rather outdated teaching methods. At the same time, I wanted to learn English more, because with the knowledge of this language, more roads are open to you, especially in the field of cinema. So I started choosing universities in England, my first option was Regents University in London, since it was located in the same area where I lived, as well as the University itself is quite advanced and interesting, but unfortunately, I did not pass IELTS very well, so to get there, I would have to retake this exam in English, and then my friends, advised me not to waste time, go to De Montfort University, I looked at this University and was happy with its development, as well as good reviews. And most importantly, there was an option where I could start my studies with a low IELTS score. These reasons led to the fact that I applied to this University.

What do you think you will get from studying here?

Well I think the most obvious answer is the knowledge that is necessary to be successful in your direction of cinema. However, in addition to this, there will be additional knowledge and experience that I can acquire. If we talk about the positive aspects, it is better to get to know the Western culture and mentality, which are very different compared to Russia. After all, it would be interesting for me to shoot, not only about Russia, but also about the West, their culture and values. Of the disadvantages during my training, I can only mention one thing that I must know - it's references. God how I hate this thing, just understanding that I should write more than a thousand words and add references to it, and several at once, can make me feel numb without much effort. The reason I hate it is quite simple. If all the other training reminds me of the similarity with Russian, and all I need is only to know the translation, then references are a completely new thing for me, which is very difficult for me to work with. A banal example - a couple of days ago I wrote an essay for 700 words, the plan + text I wrote in an hour - but the search for references alone took 2 hours, and they still need to be processed correctly. Perhaps in the future I will change my mind about this, but at the moment it is just a fix for my grades for written works - since my score from an average of 80+ without references, has fallen to the point that I do not always score the minimum.

What kind of diploma do you think will help you find a job?

Obviously, it is easier to find a job with a University degree. However, as I understand that Directors like me usually look for money for their own films, which can be a small problem, on the other hand, it all depends on the scripts and ideas that I can offer. Or make a low-budget short film that will shoot at a film festival to make itself known. In any case, the diploma will be necessary so that the Studio or organizations can allocate money for the film, because if they see that I graduated from University and received a diploma, they will be sure of my professional suitability.

What else will you do while you are here preparing to find a job at the end of your course?

I can do a lot and the University helps me in this. First, of course, this is my blog and website, where soon there will be scripts and films of my authorship. Second, it's obvious that when I graduate from University, I won't have gene flying in on a magic carpet and giving me millions of dollars of production budget for an obscure movie. In any case, you will have to promote yourself, try to get into film festivals and try to win awards, I think this is the most logical option.

Who is your inspiration in life and why?

It's hard to say, but as one person said, you should never reach out to someone, be like your idol, and I'm of the same opinion. I like movies and I believe that with the proper effort I could bring something of my own to the cinema. However, I like such Directors as Spielberg and Tarantino, I am interested in watching almost any of their films, as they are made in a special way, do not look like others and probably this is the thing that I would like to have myself, but in no case be the new Tarantino or Spielberg. A banal example that I noticed is the attempt of debutant Director Alex Goyet to repeat the success of John Hughes and made the film Excluded (2014), which, when analyzed, is very similar to the film Ferris Bueller takes a day off (1986). At the same time, the 2014 film, in its quality, level of plot and characters, can compete only in terms of idiocy, which is only worth the school principal, who loses money in gambling priadleschie school, and in the final this same principal cheerfully remains the school Director, although we were shown that he violates the law.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?

It's impossible to say for sure. Of course, we need to strive for more, but at the moment there is a chance that due to references I may not pass several written papers and the prospects will be completely different. But if I think positively, I must be very lucky to be successful. For example, you can successfully graduate from University, show up at film festivals, and then it will be easier to make a movie and find money for it. First of all, I would like to make a full-length film.I even have almost completely finished stories for such films, which are not very expensive to produce. The only way to get a budget for such films is in Russia, because it is entirely a Russian story that the Western audience will not understand. And here again, you need to be lucky, in Russia, several state organizations give money for the production of films that are culturally significant or promote good things. And from this point of view, I can get a chance to succeed.
On the other hand, I can get more experience in England and write a script and send it to a big film Studio. And there again, if you are lucky, everything will be successful. As they say, luck loves the bold, I hope this is about me.😏
